Is PLAYING THE GUITAR a possible SURVIVAL SKILL?
Strange question, you might think… But here’s the thing:
recently, I watched an episode from “Apocalypse Families” on Netflix.
And there were these expert hardcore preppers talking about food supplies, and how – in case of a black-out, no electricity – people tend to EAT MORE FOOD and DRINK MORE WATER simply because they get bored.
It gets boring fast without electricity: no phones, no tablets, no computer games. Many people tend to get a little stir-crazy when they’re locked up, can’t go outside, talk to the same people for days or even weeks.
Boredom can lead to “cabin fever” fast, losing one’s nerves can be a REAL THREAT. And THAT’S where a skill like playing the guitar comes in.
YES, being able to play music is a HUGE BOOST for morale, it helps putting smiles on back on the faces, it means having something useful to do, singing songs together and much more. You could even use the time to teach the others how to play.
MAKES SENSE, right? A guitar can be easily kept in the storage room, along with a couple of backup string sets. And it will be a REAL ASSET in coping with the stress of being forced to coop up with others in a constricted space for a while.
It’s a simple fact, and easy to see the importance of such a skill: in stressful situations – after an EMP for instance or any type of desaster that forces you to bug in and hunker down, maybe for days or weeks – it is INVALUABLE to have someone among the group of survivors who is able to play some songs.
People store games and playing cards along with their survival food, and that’s a great idea. But how much more can MUSIC brighten the day and help get through the tough times!
Being forced to bug in or bug out – the extreme STRESS of it. Being forced to live in relatively small spaces together with people puts a crazy strain on the minds and souls. Add the total BOREDOM of not being able to do ANYTHING for days and weeks – maybe without electricity even. It’s a really volatile situation, possibly.
So many preppers around the world are experts in food and water storage, fuel for heating, medicine, maybe even self-defense. But I think a lot of preppers might be a little underprepared to fight cabin fever and boredom.
We should be able to do MORE than just SURVIVE – we should be able to SUR-THRIVE! Any skills like playing music go a loooooong way in that respect!
Even in an extreme case of survival – a doomsday type situation, end of society and starting over with a group of people – ART and CULTURE will be important! MUSIC is one of the nicest and most popular art forms!
Personally, I have been a musician for almost 50 years myself, ex special forces, 35 years close protection, over 30 years instructor for close protection, close combat, weapons. Even back in the military, and before that in high school, I have learned how VALUABLE it is to being able to grab a guitar and play and sing with friends – as a fantastic way to reduce stress and to have fun, to put a smile on people’s faces. What can be nicer than to sit in a circle, listen to someone playing the guitar, chat a little, eat and drink, right?
